“Excellence in the Use of Cast Stone” 2023 Awards

Best Overall Cast Stone Project:

JOINT WINNER

Fairholme is a new build residential home, designed to be in keeping with its listed neighbouring properties with some 18th century features, using traditional designs and materials, such as stone features, oak beams and thatched roof.

As the Client wanted to see the traditional cast stone window and door surrounds on the inside as well as outside, the cast surrounds supplied by the UKCSA Full Member Thorverton Stone have been designed to incorporate a thermal break to prevent cold bridging. This results in overcoming the problem of condensation and apparent dampness on the internal stone surfaces in the warm rooms and greatly improved thermal performance of the window and door surrounds. The front porch and rear loggia are supported by solid structural cast stone columns

The technical challenges overcome by Thorverton Stone include fixing the stone elements together and to the fabric of the walls internally and externally, selecting a suitable dense insulation and designing the stainless steel fixing components.
