The client wanted to build a replica ancient fortress tower which incorporated curved windows and a circular cantilevered roof terrace using cast stone from UKCSA Member Thorverton Stone in a finish to compliment the local natural stone rubble walling.
The structure was engineered and built around a steel structure, so the challenge for Thorverton Stone Company was to design and manufacture the required curved shapes with suitable joints and interlocking features to attach to the inner steel frame and also structurally support the terrace and its outer wall above.
Stainless steel fixings and specially designed reinforcing was incorporated into the corbels and curved beam sections.
The cast stone used was “Devon Red with an acid etched finish”.
