Scarborough Spa and Seafront Redevelopment (2014)
As part of the ongoing regeneration of Scarborough’s historic Spa complex, Cast Stone from Procter Cast Stone was chosen as the best product to bring life back to the hard landscaping surrounding the Spa buildings.
When the old, crumbling natural stone balustrading was found to be in a dangerous condition, new balusters were made to faithfully reproduce the original design along with new balustrade rails and pier assemblies.
As the detailed condition survey showed that all the existing foundations and plinths were sound, it was decided to just use new balusters, rails and piers to both save on cost and speed the completion of the project.
In addition to this, it was felt that the stone like weathering characteristics of the cast stone chosen for the scheme would, over time, mellow and blend in with the existing plinths to produce a finish worthy of this high profile renovation.
Producing cast stone elements to original designs from badly eroded examples was challenging in as much as missing detail had to be reproduced and replaced prior to mould making.
This had to be millimetre perfect to satisfy all interested parties in the restoration of the landscape surrounding the main Spa Entertainments Complex.
Models were made for approval along with detailed survey drawings and hybrid moulds made to ensure accuracy and uniformity.
