Extensive refurbishment of an existing property, W. London (2017)
Supplier totally responsible for surveying, detailing & installation
The services that were required from UKCSA Full Member Procter Cast Stone by the customer were site survey, drawing production, cast stone supply and install so ‘the full package’.
The architect and contractor made it clear from the start that the stone supplier was to be totally responsible for surveying and detailing all cast stone units and the installation details.
The actual area was not built in a traditional manor (inner / outer leaf with cavity) but was by means of steelwork with ‘built-in’ blockwork. Due to the nature of a bay area such as this, the surveying is tricky due to the angles etc. Laser levels and plumb lines were used to create ‘datum’s’ to measure from.
As can be seen in the image, the actual ground level was to be raised by around 600mm at the end of the project which also added to the difficulty factor. The bay returns were actually different from one side to the other so this had to be accommodated in the moulds as the units had returns on each end. This actually meant that nearly every single unit was different so a real ‘jigsaw’ on site.
As this project was at the rear of the property it made the delivering and handling of the units extremely difficult due to the very tight access (around 1.2m wide) so a special ‘spider crane’ with the relevantly trained operator had to be used for the entire duration of the installation.
Special ‘cranked’ fixings had to be designed and the DPC / slip plains had to be incorporated into many of the joints along with special ‘weep’ points for moisture release.
The insulation had to be intricately cut around the retaining straps so very fiddly. Overall this was a very challenging project and one which we are very proud of as the image of the completed project belies the actual work that went into it.
