Top marks for Cast Stone (February 2010)

Cast stone supplied by UKCSA members is proving itself the material of choice for the new generation of schools, including the government’s  Building Schools for the Future and Academies programmes as well as independent schools. A high quality facing material, cast stone is often specified as an attractive and durable alternative to natural stone, which is generally considered too expensive for solid masonry.

Horris Hill Preparatory School
Haddonstone supplied a bespoke entablature for the new main entrance at this Newbury prep school.   The atrium effect called for the element to be fair-faced on both sides as it would be seen all round.  The steps leading up to it were standard items.

King Edward VI School, Stratford-upon-Avon
PD Edenhall supplied cast stone ashlar masonry for the elevations of this 21st century addition to an ancient grammar school for boys, where Shakespeare was once a student.

Wimbledon High School
Haddonstone created a dramatic entranceway and rain screen cladding for the Rutherford Centre for the Performing Arts at Wimbledon High School.  Designed to create a contemporary facade, the custom made cladding features cast-in literary quotations.

The Grammar School at Leeds
Woodside Cast Stone supplied a massive bespoke entranceway for the expanded Alwoodley Gates site, created for the physical merger of Leeds Girls’ High School and Leeds Grammar School. Woodside also supplied circular and square window surrounds and copings.
